Land Rover Scoops Awards

Land Rover has scooped three awards at North Shore based Adrenalin Publishing's annual vehicle awards. The Freelander 2 has won the 4WD of the year accolade from New Zealand Company Vehicle magazine and also took the Recreational 4WD award made by sister publication New Zealand 4WD magazine.

The new Range Rover Turbo Diesel V8 took out 4WD magazine's Luxury 4WD of the Year award.

Freelander 2 was launched in New Zealand in June with a choice of a 3.2 litre, six cylinder petrol engine with 171 kWs or a 2.2 litre turbo diesel with 400 Nm of torque and a very economical 7.5 litres/ 100 kilometres fuel consumption.

Both models are priced at $69,990 and come with a six speed automatic gearbox and terrain response 4WD transmission. There is ABS braking with BA and EBD and Bi-xenon headlights, rain sensing wipers, park distance control, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, trip computer, 9 speaker sound system with 6 stack CD player, seven airbags, hill descent control, roll stability control and traction and dynamic stability control.

"Freelander has most of the features of the larger Land Rover models in a compact body," said Wallis Dumper, the Managing Director of Motorcorp Distributors, the New Zealand importer of Land Rover.

"It's a terrific value for money proposition in the luxury compact SUV area of the market."

New Zealand Company Vehicle editor Robert Barry said: "Diesel powered luxury vehicles and SUVs are making further in roads into the market. The Freelander 2 TD4 won its award for offering a blend of luxury and technology that surpassed the other vehicles in its category, plus the innate ability to handle off road conditions as easily as those on road."

The Range Rover Turbo Diesel V8 is the epitome of what a luxury 4WD should be. It has ample performance thanks to the 200 kWs produced by the 3.6 litre V8 and a massive 640 Nm of torque, yet has an overall fuel economy of 25.1 miles/ gallon (11.2 litres/ 100 kms), a figure many large luxury cars cannot attain.

Yet the Turbo Diesel V8 offers all the luxury fittings you would expect, true off road ability, a spacious cabin with large luggage capacity and huge towing ability.

It has a six speed automatic gearbox and terrain response 4WD system.

"The Range Rover Turbo Diesel V8 is the complete luxury 4WD," said Mr Dumper. "While it is a big vehicle it is surprisingly economical to run compared to its petrol engined rivals. And with so much torque from little more than idle speed its practical every day performance is in many ways enhanced."

"You can have your cake and eat it too with the Range Rover Turbo Diesel V8."

And it is not only in New Zealand that Land Rover has been receiving trophies. The Scottish Motoring Writer's Guild voted the Freelander 2 its SUV (sports utility vehicle) of the year.
